What the Northern Suburbs Do to a Blind
Afternoon sun from the north-west
North- and west-facing windows here take several hours of direct, low sun through summer. Low sun is the difficult kind: it comes in under the eaves rather than over them, so an overhang does nothing and the blind is doing all the work. No salt, so timber is safe here
This is worth saying plainly because it is the opposite of our advice on the coast. Inland of the N7 there is no meaningful salt load, so real basswood blinds and ordinary steel hardware last as long as they should. On the West Coast we steer people away from both. Newer estates have shallow reveals
Homes in the newer Durbanville and Brackenfell estates are mostly aluminium-framed, and those frames often leave a reveal too shallow to take a recess-fitted blind clear of the handle. Under about 55 mm a recess fit is not possible at all and the blind has to be face-fitted onto the wall above the opening. Durbanville, Bellville and Brackenfell are three separate towns, not one “Tygerberg” area, and the sun angle is not the same in all three. Kuils River is Northern Suburbs despite sitting on the Metro South-East boundary, and Goodwood and Parow sit between the Northern Suburbs and the Cape Flats — we list them here.
