Restringing a Blind
Restringing is the most common repair we do, and on most blinds it is worth doing
rather than replacing. A lift cord fails for two reasons: ultraviolet light weakens the
cord where it sits in the stack, and grit works into the cord lock until the cord frays
against it. On a venetian the cord runs down through the holes in each slat, back up
through the ladder tape, over the pulleys in the head rail and into the cord lock —
so the whole run gets replaced as one length, never spliced. A roman blind restrings
through the rings sewn to the back of the fabric, up to the same head-rail cord lock.
We replace the cord lock at the same time if the teeth are worn, because a new cord in an
old lock frays again quickly. Cord safety matters here too: a restring is the right
moment to deal with a looped cord, and the fix is to remove the loop rather than shorten
it — on a corded blind that means anchoring the chain to the wall with a tensioner

Wooden and Faux-Wood Venetian Repairs
Timber and faux-wood venetians fail differently to aluminium. The ladder tape goes
first — it is a woven tape rather than a cord, and Cape sun perishes it while the
slats themselves are still sound, so a re-tape restores the blind for far less than a new
one. Faux-wood is appreciably heavier than timber, so its brackets, head rail and tilt
mechanism carry more load and wear sooner. Individual cracked or split slats can be
swapped rather than replacing the whole blind, provided the slat width still matches

25 mm, 50 mm and 63 mm sizes we carry. If the timber itself has warped or
the finish has lifted across most of the slats, a new
wooden blind is the better call, and we will say
so at the assessment.
Brackets, Head Rails and Fixings
A blind that has dropped, sags at one end or jams part-way through its travel usually
has a bracket problem rather than a mechanism problem. The frequent cause is a fixing
that went into plaster or a hollow section instead of sound brick or timber, so the
bracket works loose under the weight of the blind rather than the bracket itself failing.
We refix into a sound substrate, replace bent or spread brackets, and where the original
holes are no longer usable we move the fixing and make good. Head rails that have bowed
in the middle on a wide window need an extra centre bracket, not a new blind. Bracket
patterns differ between manufacturers, so let us see the blind before ordering anything

At the assessment we give you an honest call: a chain, clutch or restring is almost always worth fixing, but a sun-perished fabric on the Atlantic Seaboard is usually better replaced with a new roller blind. Either way you get a clear quote before we start.

Are Window Blinds Repairable?
Yes — most blind faults are a part swap rather than a new blind. A blind is a mechanism: a clutch, a chain, a cord lock, a tilt mechanism, brackets and a bottom rail. When one of those fails the fabric, slats and tube are almost always still sound, which is why a repair typically costs R150 to R600 plus parts against R450 to R900 per square metre for a replacement roller blind.
The exceptions are the ones where the material itself has gone rather than the mechanism: a bowed or corroded slat set, or a warped timber blind. Those are replacements, and we say so at the assessment.
Can Someone Fix My Blinds?
Yes. We repair blinds across greater Cape Town whether or not we supplied them, because most mechanisms are industry-standard by tube diameter and headrail profile, so parts can be matched regardless of the original supplier. Bring the blind in or send a photograph of the mechanism and the fault, and we will tell you whether it is a part swap, a restring or a replacement before any work starts.
