Ideal for Wide Windows & Doors

Because the louvres draw to the side and rotate, vertical blinds cover sliding doors and wide spans neatly, and let you angle out glare while keeping airflow — handy for the Cape summer. They are a cost-effective, low-maintenance option for offices, patios and living areas.

Louvre Options

  • Fabric louvres in sunscreen or dim-out weaves.
  • PVC louvres for kitchens, bathrooms and high-traffic areas — easy to wipe clean.

What Is the Difference Between Louvres and Blinds?

A louvre is a component; a blind is the whole product. On a vertical blind the louvres are the individual hanging vanes, each clipped into its own carrier in the track. So “louvre blinds” and “vertical blinds” are the same thing — louvre is simply what most people in the Cape call them, after the parts that do the work.

The word is also used for fixed louvre shutters and for ventilation louvres in a wall, which is where the confusion comes from. Those are building components and do not draw back; a vertical blind’s louvres both rotate through 180 degrees and stack to the side.

Louvre Widths and Track Spans

Vertical louvres come in two standard widths: 89 mm (often written 90 mm) and 127 mm. The narrower vane suits ordinary windows and the wider one suits large spans, where fewer, broader louvres read as calmer and there are fewer carriers to fail.

Louvre width Louvres per 2,400 mm span Stack to one side Suits
89 mm ~27 ~280 mm Standard windows, offices, narrower reveals
127 mm ~19 ~230 mm Sliding doors, wide living-room spans

Verticals are the most cost-effective blind for a wide opening at about R400 to R750 per square metre supplied and installed, because the cost scales with track length rather than with a heavy roll or a deep stack. They can be split-drawn from the centre or stacked entirely to one side, which is usually the right answer beside a sliding door so the stack sits clear of the opening panel.

Individual louvres, carriers and tilt rods are replaceable without a new blind — see blind parts and spares.
