A skylight blind has to hold position against gravity, which rules out anything that simply hangs. It runs in side channels or on a tensioned cable system, and because roof glass is the hottest in the house, the fabric choice matters more here than anywhere else. Why a Normal Blind Does Not Work
On a vertical window the fabric hangs flat under its own weight. Tilt that window towards horizontal and the fabric sags away from the glass, bellies in the middle and will not stay where you put it. Every real skylight blind solves this the same way: the fabric edge is captured in a channel down each side, so it is held flat at any angle and stops wherever it is set.
The Heat Problem Is Bigger Than You Think
Roof glass takes near-perpendicular sun through the middle of the day, when solar intensity peaks. An unshaded skylight is the single hottest opening in a Cape Town house in February. An internal blind with a pale or metallised backing facing the glass reflects a large share of that energy straight back out before it becomes heat in the room — the mechanism is set out in do blinds keep heat out.
| Fabric | Heat performance | Room effect |
|---|---|---|
| Blockout, metallised backing | Best | Full darkness, coolest |
| Blockout, plain | Very good | Full darkness |
| Pale sunscreen | Good | Keeps daylight and sky view |
| Dark sunscreen | Moderate | Best glare control, warmer |
| Pleated / honeycomb | Good, adds an air pocket | Soft diffused light |
Reaching It
Most skylights are out of arm’s reach, which leaves three options. A telescopic wand is cheapest and works up to about 3 m. A crank rod handles higher openings. Motorisation is the honest answer for anything above a stairwell or in a double-volume space — and a battery tube motor needs no cabling, which matters when the opening is in a finished ceiling. See motorised blind systems.
Measuring a Roof Window
Skylight blinds are almost always made to the glazing aperture rather than the outer frame, because the channels fix to the frame either side of the glass. Get the frame make and model if you can — many roof windows take a blind sized to a published code, and that is far more reliable than a tape measure held overhead. The general method is in how to measure for blinds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do skylight blinds need side channels?
Yes, in almost every case. Without channels the fabric sags away from the glass and will not hold position on a sloped or horizontal opening.
Can you motorise a skylight blind?
Yes, and it is usually the right call for anything out of reach. A battery tube motor avoids running cable through a finished ceiling.
Will a skylight blind stop the room overheating?
It will cut a large share of the gain, not all of it. A blockout fabric with a reflective backing performs best, but an internal blind is always managing heat that has already passed the glass.
