Heat, Not Glare

Away from the moderating effect of the sea, Paarl and Wellington regularly run several degrees hotter than the coast on a summer afternoon, and a west-facing room with unshaded glass behaves like a greenhouse. The useful distinction is that shading the glass on the outside beats anything you do inside — but of the things you can do inside, a light-coloured outward face reflects heat before the glass absorbs it, and that matters more than the colour you see from the room. Klapmuts, Pniel and Kylemore sit between Stellenbosch and Paarl and belong to neither. Franschhoek is its own valley, roughly half an hour past Stellenbosch rather than a suburb of it, and Wellington is a separate town north of Paarl.

Do blinds actually reduce heat, or only glare?

Both, but less than external shading does. Inside the room, a light-coloured outward-facing fabric reflects a meaningful share of the heat before the glass absorbs it. On a west-facing Paarl window that is a real difference.

My house is a graded heritage building. Can I still fit blinds?

Almost certainly. Blinds fit inside the window opening and do not alter the elevation, which is what conservation conditions protect. Check your specific conditions first and we will work to them.

Do you charge extra to come out to Stellenbosch, Paarl or Franschhoek?
