Window Blinds in the Southern Suburbs

The Southern Suburbs have the oldest housing stock of anywhere we cover, and old windows are rarely square. That makes the on-site measure worth more here than anywhere else in the metro. Window Blinds Cape Town supplies, installs and repairs made-to-measure blinds from Mowbray through to Tokai — free measure and quote, no call-out charge. Call 081 411 8471.

Old Windows, Wet Winters

Nothing is square, and that is normal

A hundred-year-old timber sash frame moves. It is common to find 10–15 mm of difference between the width at the top of an opening and the width at the bottom, and a blind cut to the wrong one of those either jams or leaves a gap. We measure width and drop in three places on every opening and cut to the smallest — the method is in how to measure for blinds. This is the specific reason we will not quote a Southern Suburbs job off measurements sent by email.

Deep reveals are an advantage

The deep reveals in older Claremont, Rondebosch and Wynberg homes let a blind sit fully inside the opening, which looks better and is easier to seal against light. It is the one place where the old stock makes the job simpler rather than harder.

The wet side of the mountain

Newlands, Bishopscourt and Kirstenbosch sit under the highest rainfall in the metro, and the consequence for blinds is condensation. A blind held tight against a cold single-glazed pane traps moisture behind it, and in a bathroom or a north-facing bedroom that is where mould starts. Two practical answers: leave an air gap rather than sealing the blind to the glass, and use aluminium or PVC rather than fabric in the wettest rooms. Set out fully in blinds, condensation and mould.

Shade from the oaks, so privacy matters more than glare

Mature oak canopy over much of the area means less direct sun than the Northern Suburbs get, and correspondingly more of the brief is privacy from a street or a neighbour rather than heat. That points at dim-out and dual-band blinds rather than heavy blockout — see blinds and privacy and zebra blinds.

Southern Suburbs Areas With Their Own Page

We have a dedicated page for Claremont and Pinelands. Everywhere else in the region is on the list below and is covered on the same terms.

Every area we measure and install in

If your suburb or estate is on this list, the measure and quote is free and there is no call-out charge. The thing worth telling us is how old the windows are.

Places people mix up

Retreat, Steenberg and Grassy Park sit on the Cape Flats side of the line and are often mis-filed as Southern Suburbs. Constantia, Bishopscourt and Tokai are three separate areas rather than one “Constantia valley”.

Southern Suburbs Blinds – FAQs

Can I just send you my measurements?

For a rough price, yes. For an order, no — not in the Southern Suburbs. Old openings are usually out of square by enough to matter, and a made-to-measure blind cut to a wrong figure cannot be altered afterwards. The measure is free.

What should I fit in a bathroom that keeps steaming up?

Aluminium venetians or a PVC blind, mounted with an air gap rather than pressed against the glass. Fabric in a cold, wet room is what leads to mould behind the blind.

Do blinds work on sash windows?

Yes. The deep reveal on an old sash window is actually the easiest thing to fit into. The only real question is whether you want the blind to clear the top sash when it is raised.

Do you cover Constantia, Tokai and Bishopscourt?

Yes, along with everything else on the list above. Free measure and quote, no call-out charge.
