What Salt Plus Damp Actually Does

The mechanism goes first

Salt air corrodes the clutch, the chain, the brackets and the screws. Damp then keeps that corrosion working. On a sea-facing peninsula window a cheap mechanism can be stiff within two or three seasons while the fabric still looks new — which is exactly the case where a repair is the right call rather than a replacement. We fit rust-resistant hardware here as standard.

No real timber in a sea-facing or wet room

Basswood slats swell and bow in this air. Faux-wood looks the same, costs less and is unaffected. Aluminium and PVC are the other safe choices. If you want real timber, put it in an inland-facing room away from the bathroom — see blind fabrics compared.

Older cottages, smaller openings

Much of Kalk Bay, Muizenberg and Simon’s Town is small semi-detached and cottage stock with narrow, deep openings, and some of it is in a heritage overlay where the street elevation is protected. Neither stops a blind — blinds sit inside the opening — but a narrow window needs a headrail sized to fit, not a standard one cut down. See blinds for small windows.

Beyond Fish Hoek there is effectively a single route in and out, and it is the reason we book peninsula measures earlier in the day rather than squeezing them onto the end of a northern run. It does not change the price. It changes what time we say we will be there.

Muizenberg and Lakeside are the northern end of the South Peninsula, not the Southern Suburbs. Simon’s Town, Glencairn and Da Gama Park are separate from Fish Hoek, and Noordhoek and Sun Valley are separate from Kommetjie.

My blind still looks fine but the chain has gone stiff. Repair or replace?

Repair, almost always. On the peninsula the mechanism corrodes long before the fabric wears out, and a new clutch and chain costs a fraction of a new blind.

Are wooden blinds a bad idea in Fish Hoek or Kommetjie?

Real basswood is, in any room that faces the sea or gets steamy. Faux-wood gives you the same look with none of the swelling.

Do you charge travel to Simon’s Town or Scarborough?

No. Everything on the list above is a free measure with no call-out charge. We simply book peninsula visits earlier in the day.

Will a blind work in a heritage cottage?

Yes. Blinds fit inside the window opening and do not alter the street elevation, which is what a heritage overlay protects. We still size the headrail to the actual opening rather than cutting down a standard one.
