Measuring around burglar bars
If the bars sit inside the reveal, a recess-fitted blind will foul them. There are two honest options and we will tell you which applies at the measure: face-fit the blind onto the wall above the opening so it hangs clear in front of the bars, or recess-fit a slim headrail if there is genuinely enough depth behind them. What does not work is ordering a made-to-measure blind to the glass size and hoping. Send a photo when you enquire and we can usually tell you before we arrive.
Steel frames give you a shallow reveal
The steel casement windows in much of the older Cape Flats stock leave very little depth between the glass and the face of the wall, and the window handle takes up most of what there is. Face-fitting is the normal answer, and it has an advantage: a face-fitted blind overlaps the opening, so it blocks more light around the edges than a recess fit does.
Wind-blown sand
The open flats carry fine sand in the summer south-easter, and it works into a roller mechanism through the gap at the end of the tube. It is the most common cause of a blind that runs rough here. Aluminium and PVC do best here
Between the sand, the sun and the fact that many of these are small utility windows, aluminium venetians and PVC are the sensible specification — wipe clean, no fabric to fade, and the cheapest thing on the list to replace one slat of. Aluminium blinds are usually the right call.
